To practice as a radiographer in Australia, you must be a registered radiographer under the national registration, and accreditation scheme with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA). Registration as a medical radiation practitioner in Australia is compulsory in all states and territories. To be registered as a radiographer in Australia, you must meet certain registration standards specified by the MRPBA. Some of the registration standards include:
- You must be a qualified radiographer in an approved area of study.
- You must meet certain English language skills requirements.
As specified by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia, to practice as a radiographer in Australia you must also be registered in a scope of practice. There are certain divisions of registration a medical radiation practitioner must be registered in. These divisions include:
- Diagnostic radiography
- Radiation therapy
- Nuclear medicine technology
Radiographers wishing to practice in Australia must also be registered in one of the following specified categories:
- Graduate registration
- General registration
- Limited registration
- Non-practicing registration
- Renewal of registration
Graduate Radiographer Registration
If you are about to conclude your graduate study, or you recently concluded an approved program of study, you can apply for graduate registration. Final year students can apply under general or provisional registration. If you are a final year graduate you can apply for registration as a radiographer in Australia, if you meet following circumstances:
- The individual has completed an approved program of study
- The individual has never been registered in Australia or any other country
- The individual has never practiced as a health professional in Australia
- The individual is applying for registration as a radiographer
- The individual has a valid Visa or MasterCard, credit or debit card.
- The individual has less than 5 previous names
Provisional Radiographer Registration
Provisional registration is available to Australian and New Zealand graduates who have completed an approved program of study. Provisional registration is granted for a 12 month period. To be registered in provisional registration the individual must meet the following criteria:
- The individual has never practiced as a medical radiation practitioner.
- The individual is required by the National Board to undergo a period of supervised practice to satisfy general registration as a part of their approved program of study.
General Radiographer Registration
General registration is available to recent medical radiation practitioner graduates, who have completed an approved program of study, and they meet the following criteria:
- The individual has never practiced as a radiographer in Australia.
- The individual is NOT required by the National Board to undergo a period of supervised practice to satisfy general registration, as part of their approved program of study.
Limited Radiographer Registration
Limited registration is for qualified medical radiation practitioners who do not qualify for general registration, but wish to complete post graduate training. Registration in this category is granted for a specific period of time with a specific purpose. This registration category is for those who require clinical training as part of their clinical training program.
Non-practicing Registration
Non-practicing registration is for those qualified medical radiation practitioners who do not wish to practice their profession. You can apply for non-practising registration in the following circumstances:
- The individual holds or has previously held general registration.
- The individual has held registration as a medical radiation practitioner under a different Act that was equivalent with general registration under the national law.
