To work as a Nurse or Midwife in the United Kingdom, you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and appear on their register. It is important to note that registration renewal is required every 3 years. If you meet any of the following criteria, you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council:
- You are a United Kingdom graduate from an approved Nursing or Midwifery study programme.
- You have been trained in the European Union or you are an EEA member.
- You have trained as a Nurse or Midwife in any other country in the world.
As the NMC update their policies and procedures regularly, we suggest checking their website on a regular basis for the registration pathway that you are eligible for. For this information, please refer to the joining the register section on the NMC website.
From October 2014, the NMC has a new process in place for overseas registration for registered nurses trained outside the UK or Europe. To learn more about these processes please refer to the registration for nurses trained outside the UK and Europe page on the NMC website.
